Treating Acid Reflux Naturally to Heal Your Gut

76

Treating acid reflux, GERD, and heartburn takes some effort, but there are natural ways to heal your gut.

What are the Causes of Acid Reflux?

Before treating acid reflux, you need to identify the causes. The biggest culprit is diet. An unhealthy diet, loaded with processed foods, can lead to GERD.

At a bare minimum, you should clear out some of the main food triggers like:

  • Tomato sauces
  • Chocolate
  • Oranges and orange juice
  • Caffeinated beverages
  • Carbonated beverages
  • Processed meats like sausage and even bacon
  • Spicy foods
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Vegetable or Canola oils
  • Alcohol
  • Smoking

These foods should be a good starting point.

However, if you want GERD to heal faster, follow an anti-inflammatory diet for at least 30 days.

Furthermore, certain medications can cause acid reflux, such as

  • Frequent use of antibiotics
  • Osteoporosis medications, known as bisphosphonates, like Fosamax, Boniva, or Actonel
  • Pain reliever meds like Ibuprofen and aspirin
  • Sedatives and tranquilizers, including valium and diazepam
  • Calcium Channel Blockers for high blood pressure

Other common causes of GERD include hiatal hernias, pregnancy, chronic inflammation, and mental or emotional distress.

What are the Symptoms of GERD?

Most people are aware of common symptoms, which include

  • Burning pain behind the breastbone
  • Regurgitation of food

However, there are less commonly known symptoms, which are

  • A bitter taste in your mouth
  • Waking up in the middle of the night choking or coughing
  • Dry mouth
  • Bad breath
  • Bloating after meals
  • Nausea
  • Belching, increased gas production, and burping after meals
  • Hiccups that are difficult to stop
  • Discomfort when bending over or lying down or acid re-gurging into your throat with these movements.
  • Hoarseness when you wake up or throughout the day
  • Chronic throat irritation, soreness, and dryness

But this is not the end. You can heal your gut to avoid taking medications and prevent more serious problems down the road.

How to Wean off Medications to Treat Acid Reflux

First and foremost, you cannot stop taking medications, like Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid, or the generic forms, cold turkey when treating acid reflux, especially when taking them long-term. It will cause a violent reactive backlash if you do.

You will need to wean them off slowly. Always do so with a doctor’s supervision.

What to Do When Treating Acid Reflux

While dietary changes are the foundation of recovery, there are various other things you should do to accelerate the process.

Fixing your Gut for Treating Acid Reflux

First, start by taking a good-quality digestive enzyme. It will help you fully digest your food and allow nutrients to be absorbed so they do not sit in your stomach too long.

However, if you take a digestive enzyme and it flares up your symptoms, you likely have a lot of damage from acid reflux. We recommend taking an ultra-gentle digestive enzyme like Digestzyme by Transfomation Enzymes in those cases.

When treating acid reflux, you also need to repair the stomach lining. We typically use a supplement called Gastroven by Premier Research Labs.

If your acid reflux is severe or daily, we recommend staying on this formula for two months.

Afterward, I switch my patients to GI Integrity by Pure Encapsulations and place them back on the stronger digestive enzyme.

Add in Probiotics for Treating Acid Reflux

Next, incorporate probiotics into your regimen; however, not all probiotics are the same. When treating acid reflux, we recommend the following strains:

  • Lactobacillus gasseri
  • Lactobacillus Rhamnosus
  • Lactobacillus Reuteri
  • Lactobacillus Acidophilus
  • Bifidobacterium Bifidum

I recommend staying on probiotics for four months. After that, get your probiotics naturally from your diet by eating fermented vegetables like sauerkraut or Kimchi, or add Kefir made with whole milk and no added sugars or preservatives.

Drink Organic Camomile or Ginger Tea

Next, drink organic chamomile or ginger tea to reduce inflammation. Fresh ginger tea is the best option for treating acid reflux.

Grate fresh ginger or boil a 1-inch piece in water for 20 minutes. Add some manuka honey, and you have a great start.

Take Magnesium

We also recommend taking 200 mg of magnesium twice daily.

Change Your Diet for Treating Acid Reflux

The most important part of conquering heartburn is changing your diet and incorporating intermittent fasting. This is the only way to ensure it does not return.

Treating Acid Reflux in Babies

Acid reflux is prevalent in babies. About half of all babies spit up multiple times a day for the first three months of life.

Doctors now prescribe generic forms of PPIs for infants when treating acid reflux. No matter the brand, all the side effects are the same.

However, there is an easy way to correct acid reflux in infants. I worked with a baby, Thomas, who projectile vomited any time his mother fed him breast milk or formula. While doctors tried prescribing medications, I was able to work with them to heal his gut naturally in 30 days.

Thomas’s mother fed him breastmilk and formula. First, I changed his formula from the standard commercial formula to a goat-milk-based formula, which is less inflammatory for the GI tract.

I also had the mom pump her breast milk so she could add digestive enzymes into her breast milk, specifically Digestzyme by Transformation Enzymes

I also gave Thomas a powder supplement called colostrum and a probiotic. I added these to his bottle of breast milk or goat milk formula.

Lastly, we applied a castor oil pack to his stomach daily. It worked like a charm every time while treating his acid reflux.

Whether your precious baby is struggling or you struggle with heartburn and acid reflux, you now have the information to ditch those PPI medications before you become a medical statistic. I hope you use this information to reclaim all parts of your health.
